Welcome to Brian's Unsolicited Editorial #4 (Also Panorama Disk #4)
How about a quick review on a couple of items, huh?
Sure, ok, here goes...
Item #1 - Digi-View Digitizer.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
This little gizmo is the digitizer that did the now famous Girl with
the lollipop picture that you see in the AmigaWorld magazine ad for
Digi-View, as well as on the latest Commodore dealer demo tape, and
even on some of the PD Disks.
The Digi-View digitizer will sell for $199.00 US and requires a
Black & White interlaced camers. To digitize color requires three
passes with the digitizing software, one for each of the primary
colors (RGB).
It digitizes the pictures into 320x200 (Lo-Res) BUT in 4096 color
HAM mode. You can display the pictures or print them in HAM mode,
but since there are no HAM Dpaints or Images around yet, we have
to convert the pictures DOWN to 32 colors for them to work with
the popular Drawing programs. There is an option to do that also.
The Digitizer module itself is only 1cm thick, 5 cm wide, and 7 cm
long (½ inch thick, 2 inches wide and 2½ inches long for you USA
people).
I recommend this unit to anyone who needs quality and not speed.
An average Color digitization takes 1-2 minutes, and it is hard
for any human or other living creature to sit still that long.
I give Digi-View a 10 our of a possible 10 as an Amiga product.

Tecmar 20 Meg Hard Disk
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
To make a long story short, my Tecmar 20 Meg Hard Disk for my Amiga
is now sitting in the corner awaiting an unknown fate. It worked
great when it worked, but all of a sudden it started to crash all
too often. I think it was due to all the demonstrations it did,
and all the banging and other abuse it was given.
Rumors have it that Tecmar is out of money, and will not be doing
Amiga hardware. Any truth to this?

Micro-Forge 40 Meg Hard Disk and 7 Slot Expansion.
¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯
Replacing the Tecmar on my desk is the MicroForge 40 Meg Hard disk and
seven slot expansion box. And boy, is it LARGE. It is about 25%
larger than a PC case, all around, and it needs to be mated to the
Amiga expansion slot. It has 2 hard disk slots, and only one is
used for an industry standard 40 Meg drive. After asking MicroForge
I was informed that I can take a Cheapie hard drive and make an 80
Meg drive quite easily. All configuration, formatting, Backup, etc
software comes included with it.
The expansion box has 6 empty slots for memory (2 meg boards) and
other peripherals (Audio Digitizer, Time Clock). I will report
on these peripherals as I receive them.
The expansion box has a 130 Watt power supply built in, and is a
bit noisy (You can hear the fan, as opposed to the Tecmar where
you heard nothing but the fan.)
Sure is nice to have 40 Meg. Now I just need the tape backup.

That is about it for the reviews for now. Next time, possibly
a review on SoftWorks Compiled Basic for the Amiga with hooks into
all the Kernal Routines.
